Your NetID and Password

All students, faculty, and staff at the University of Tennessee have a NetID and password. Your NetID permits secure access to a variety of Web-based applications.

Your NetID

If you are new to the University, you may have been given your NetID as part of your orientation information.

If you have a University email address, then your NetID is part of that address. For example if your email address is "smith123@tennessee.edu", then your NetID is "smith123".

If you don't know your University NetID, search for yourself in the UT Online Directory. Or enter your full name below (first middle-initial last) and we will try to find your NetID:

Note: Although students and employees are added to the online directory automatically through regularly scheduled updates, there is a time lag, thus request forms are provided to handle special circumstances, such as adding a new employee who needs services immediately, providing access to a contractor or other person not paid through the University payroll system, or adding an email address for a campus organization.

Your NetID password

Your default NetID password is composed of the following three pieces of information:

For example, if you were born February 1979 and your UT ID Number is 123-45-6789 then your default password would be fe796789.

Note: The default password allows you to gain initial access to password protected facilities. Since it is composed of personal information that others could guess, it is relatively insecure and should not be used as your permanent password. You should change this password to something more private as soon as possible.

Changing Your NetID Password

You can change your NetID password online anytime by logging in to UT Online Directory and clicking the change password link.

NetID Password Resets

If you can't remember your NetID password, you can have it reset to your initial default password. The method varies by campus and you can get additional information by contacting one of the locations listed below:

Chattanooga Campus

Drop by the Helpdesk in 103 Administration Building for assistance from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Call (423) 425-4000 or submit requests using Online Request Form for additional information.

Knoxville Campus

Students with a PIN can reset a forgotten password online at Password Reset by entering their UT ID Number and Student PIN Code to verify their identity.

Otherwise drop by the OIT Service Center in 104 Aconda Court and ask for a NetID password reset. Bring your UT ID Card to verify your identity. (Aconda Court is located at the corner of Volunteer Blvd. and Cumberland Ave. near the University Center.)

Memphis Campus

Drop by the Helpdesk in 721 Lamar Alexander Building, or call (901) 448-2222 or (800) 413-7830.

myUT Portal access to IRIS

Employees needing to have their myUT Portal password reset in order to access the IRIS WebGui, depending on your campus location, should email one of the contacts below. Please specify at least the following information: NetID, Full name, Department, Campus or Unit, Office Address, Office Phone number . Someone will contact you to verify your information and reset your password. Note: these contacts are only for changing your NetID password, not your IRIS password.

Effort Certification

If you are involved with effort certification, you can request a password reset by going to Online Effort Certification and clicking on the "Forget your password?" link.
